Donna Fathi was born in 1980, an ambitious and creative spirit from the start. As a teenager, her dream was to become a hip-hop dancer in the music industry, captivated by the rhythm, energy, and freedom of expression. Though life would take her down a different path, she never let go of the music that moved her soul.

At just 15 years old, Donna discovered another talent—hairdressing. Self-taught and passionate, she began experimenting with styles and cuts for her friends. By 20, she was determined to hone her craft and enrolled in hair school with a clear plan: get certified, build her skills, gain loyal clients, save her money, and open a salon that blended her love for hip-hop with her passion for hairstyling.

At 27, Donna made her dream a reality, opening the first Studio D Hair Salon—a cozy 600-square-foot space across from John Oliver High School. It had five hair stations and a unique vibe inspired by the music that had always fueled her creativity. The shop quickly became a hub for the neighborhood, with Donna taking under her wing young aspiring hairstylists and barbers, often from the high school across the street. She taught them on the job, sharing her knowledge and fostering their confidence.

As word spread about her skills and mentorship, Studio D grew busier each year. By the time Donna was 35, she had outgrown her original location. She took a bold step and opened a larger, 1,100-square-foot salon with 12 hair stations and even a tattoo room. During construction, skeptics questioned whether she would ever fill so many stations, but by the grand opening, every seat was taken. Studio D had officially become the busiest salon in East Vancouver.

Donna’s ability to spot talent and nurture it created a legacy of hairstylists and barbers who went on to open their own businesses, inspired by her example. Over the years, she has mentored over 40 young professionals, building not just a salon but a community of skilled artists.

Today, Studio D Hair Salon remains a vibrant space where music, creativity, and cutting-edge styles collide. Clients travel from all over, including North Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby, and even from as far as Beverly Hills and New York, to experience the artistry and energy of Studio D. Donna’s vision and dedication transformed her teenage dream into a thriving reality, proving that when passion meets perseverance, success knows no bounds.

Donna, the owner, is AMAZING! Great at color, highlights, cuts and styling. I live in Los Angeles and when things opened up just after Covid I was visiting Vancouver and looking for a color specialist who could duplicate my stylist’s formula from a salon in Beverly Hills. Donna had the brand of color I needed and I have been coming to see her ever since! Eventually, Donna took over the care of all my hair needs. Now, when I come to Vancouver I always check to make sure Donna has availability to provide her fabulous hair services for me. Great place, easy to find free street parking, and you will leave with a skip in your step!

I came here to get rid of my at that point long and messy buzzcut but not knowing what I want to get instead, but Maria did an amazing job on that! She really took her time for me to freestyle an incredible fire cut and colouring!
